作詞・作曲は桑田佳祐。
1982年7月 サザンオールスターズが発表した5枚目のオリジナル・アルバム『NUDE MAN』に収録されている。同年9月に、研ナオコによるカバーシングルが発売された。
研ナオコがスタッフとの食事中に、サザンオールスターズの『NUDE MAN』を聴く機会があり、その場で「夏をあきらめて」をカバーしたいと申し出た。スタッフは女性の歌「私はピアノ」を推したが、研ナオコは「夏をあきらめて」がいいと譲らなかったそう。（以上Wikipediaより）
研ナオコ版「夏をあきらめて」は、第24回日本レコード大賞金賞（作者の桑田佳祐には作曲賞）、日本有線大賞優秀音楽賞、全日本有線放送大賞最優秀スター賞を受賞している。
サザンオールスターズによる原曲も、もちろんいい。研ナオコ版は、サザン版よりも一層切なく憂いを含んでおり、まったく雰囲気が違う。酷暑も白けていくような虚しさがまたいい。気分や状況によって聴き分けたい、特別感のある1曲。
